TAIPEI, Taiwan - According to Taiwan's Economic Daily News, due to the destruction of nitrogen purification equipment at DRAM manufacturer Micron Technology, Inc's plant in Taoyuan, Taiwan, it will be necessary to halt production and replace the equipment, leading to an expected possible shortage of tens of thousands DRAM units. To date, Taiwan Micron has yet to provide further clarification.
In reference to information regarding equipment providers, Economic Daily News pointed out that equipment which is crucial to the supply of purified nitrogen was destroyed, and this resulted in water vapor failure as oxygen was inserted during incineration and nitrogen containing water vapor was transported to the factory site. As a result of this, over one hundred machines were contaminated.
The current preliminary assessment is that this will directly lead to a loss of 10,000 to 15,000 units in June and affect tens of thousands of chips. The impact should not be very large on the overall DRAM industry; however, the majority of N2-manufactured products are provided for use in DDR4 mobile memory used in Apple mobile phones, and this has raised market concerns.
