TAIPEI, Taiwan - The 2016 International Symposium on VLSI will be held in Hsinchu, Taiwan starting on April 25. This year's participants will examine and discuss the state of development and trends associated with IoT (Internet of Things), 5G, More than Moore's Law, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
A number of leading semiconductor and chip design industry participants such as Intel, Bell Labs, ROHM Semiconductor, and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom have been invited to share the latest in semiconductor components and manufacturing processes, chip design trends, and systems integration design and applications.
The organizer, ITRI, noted that the 2016 VLSI Symposia will feature three highly influential speakers. One of the topics will address the physical limits gradually being reached in transistor channel size and the consequent challenges faced by the semiconductor industry with respect to Moore's Law.
Organizers have invited Dr. Peng Bai, Vice President of Intel Corp's Technology and Manufacturing Group, to deliver a speech entitled "The Present and Future of Moore's Law." Mr Hidemi Takasu, Chief Adviser of ROHM Co., Ltd. will speak “'More than Moore' Expands the Semiconductor World," while Dr. Young-Kai Chen of Bell Laboratories will analyze scaling with silicon photonics in semiconductor circuitry.
New waves of technologies and applications involving 5G, IoT, cloud computing, and Big Data will continue to impact the semiconductor industry. Dr. Tzi-Cker Chiueh, General Director of ITRI’s Information and Communication Research Laboratories, will speak on "New Systems Opportunities in Cloud-Scale Data Center" in a joint plenary session.
And just as 4G networks become more commonplace, advanced nations are rushing to develop 5G technology and standards. Dr. Mu-Piao Shih, President and Director of Taiwan's leading telecom operator Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. will then address the topic "Taiwan 4G Progress and 5G Evolution."
Meanwhile, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Professor Zexiang Li will discuss the abundant business opportunities associated with UAV and DJI in light of advancements in drone-related technology.
This year's event will be held from April 25 to April 27 at the Ambassador Hotel in Hsinchu. The 2016 ERSO Award will be presented on the opening day of the symposia. The award, which is the highest honor in Taiwan's semiconductor industry, recognizes an individual for his or her outstanding contributions to the industry.
