TAIPEI, Taiwan — MediaTek has won another international big customer, according to Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Sony will adjust its components purchase policy by reducing components suppliers, and focusing on 250 strategic suppliers, one of which is MediaTek that is being considered favorable information if Sony would use more of their smartphone chipsets.
MediaTek and Qualcomm are in cutthroat fight for getting more chipsets customers. MediaTek's quad-core chipset has been used by Sony Xperia C last year, it is said that Sony will keep choosing MediaTek's chipsets solutions including octa-core chipset.
Moreover, another international big firm, Panasonic uses MediaTek's quad-core MT6582M 1.3GHz processor as their comeback to smartphone market.
Sony reforms its components purchase policy on wireless-related components, semiconductor sensor, and panel, those 10 core components for manufacturing smartphones, digital cameras, and game consoles. Sony will choose 2 or 3 international big firms for each core component as their strategic partners, including MediaTek and AU Optronics.
However, Xiaomi's latest 5.5-inch Honmi NOTE smartphones are also embedded with octa-core processors of MediaTek. It soon has become a seckilling and received 6 million pre-porders, which is a driving force for MediaTek.
