TAIPEI, Taiwan－ Anti-China protests in Vietnam turn into riot and cause the collateral damage of 30 Taiwanese manufactures including FENewC, Zhengxin, Unipresident, GMTC, TPPC etc. and all of which have postponed the operation of Vietnamese production line expect Formosa Plastic Group. More than 100 local Taiwan-owned factories were invaded and destroyed and many of them were set fire.
Formosa Plastic Group suffered most amid the riots than other Taiwanese companies. A violent clash that Vietnamese workers against Mainland Chinese employees was occured in Ha Tinh Steel Plant, Formosa’s largest invest project in Vietnam, and Yang Hung-chi, CEO of Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corp, lead thousands of Taiwanese workers to evacuate to their dormitories. Besides Ha Tinh Plant, Formosa Taffeta and Formosa Industries Corporation, whose cadres even wounded to hospital emergency room, were broke into and robbed by mob.
Hong Fu-yuan, president of Formosa Industries Corporation, pointed out that no production facilities were destroyed, but the computer, television and all the money were looted. This incident will affect the willingness of Taiwan’s enterprises to invest in Vietnam, he added.
Hon Chuan Vietnam co. was shut down temporarily and evacuated the workers in response to the intruders’ protest. AD Group Vietnam, a golf products manufacture, shut down on Tuesday and Zhengxin Tyre factory, located in Nhon Trach Industrial Park , was suspended as an attack on the plant.
Taiwan-based Eclat Textile Corp. expected that Vietnamese government should implement aggressive action to deal with riots and protect the safety of foreign companies.
The Council of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Vietnam recommends Taiwanese companies located in the anti-china red-zone to suspend the operation and hang a flag outside displaying “WE ARE TAIWAN-BASED COMPANY NOT CHINESE” hoping to avoid mob attacks.
